WHERE YOU COME IN

We are looking for a Volunteer Engagement Summer Intern to join our team at Make-A-Wish® Canada. We are looking for a driven, energetic, and creative student who is looking for valuable, real-world volunteer engagement experience!

 

Reporting to the Director of Volunteer Engagement, the summer intern is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of the volunteer program, including community outreach, training, and continuously engaging with our volunteers, focusing on building and maintaining positive and rewarding volunteer partnerships. 


This role is based in Toronto (North York).  It is a summer internship at 5 days (35 hours) per week, Monday to Friday, and is on a hybrid schedule (2 days in office/3 days work from home office). The expected start date for the successful candidate is June 3rd, with an end date of August 16th.


WHAT YOU WILL DO 

  • Assist the Volunteer Engagement Coordinators (VEC’s) with ensuring wish reveals, wishes and development events requiring volunteer assistance are properly staffed.
  • Responsible for sending out, and ensuring follow up is done on, the annual Volunteer Survey.
  • Compile data to showcase the results of the survey.
  • Attend large regional events to help coordinate volunteers, as needed.
  • May be required to assist with onboarding new volunteers during peak times; this includes screening, interviewing, and orientation.
  • Engage and train volunteers for large events (100+ volunteers).
  • Conduct ongoing training for wish granting volunteers to ensure they are kept current on program changes and best practices, and that they continue to meet the expectations of their role.
  • Respond in a timely manner to volunteer questions and concerns.
  • Maintain up-to-date volunteer records in the CRM.


WHAT YOU BRING

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Volunteer Management or Special Events, or related field.
  • Must be between 18 and 30 years of age (requirement of Canada Summer Jobs funding).
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (requirement of Canada Summer Jobs funding).
  • Presentation skills: ability to lead facilitated training sessions.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Reliable team player.
  • Excellent written, verbal and organization skills.
  • Curious and eager to learn.
  • Innovative, creative, resourceful, go-getter and self-starter; you enjoy challenging yourself.
  • Some experience in a related role is preferred.
  • Proficiency with common computer applications, such as MS Office, Internet, Outlook.
  • A clear Criminal Background Check will be required.


YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • Hybrid work environment: 2 days in-office per week, and 3 days remote.
  • Attendance at events will be required periodically, which may be indoors or outdoors and subject to inclement weather.  Some events may occur on weekends or after regular work hours; commensurate time off will be provided.

 

Physical/Mental Effort

  • May be required to lift boxes and equipment (<25lbs) at events, such as swag, wish items, wish boxes, etc.
