Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Inspector of Support Services, the Victim Services Coordinator works in collaboration with members of the Saint John Police (SJP) to provide clients with crisis intervention and supports. A key aspect of this position is establishing cooperative working relationships with community-based services delivery to victims of crime and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to provide and advocate for victims.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordination of crisis intervention services to internal/external clients and partners
  • Conduct follow-up support/check-in services for identified high-risk victims and families, in collaboration with various SJP (i.e., Family Protection Unit) and other internal/external coordinated response teams
  • Provide general and specific information to victims on police processes, legal systems, and crime prevention
  • Liaise with community and government agencies (i.e., Department of Social Development, Hospitals, Mental Health Clinics, Physicians, Therapists/Counsellors, Provincial Victim Services, etc.)
  • Send timely referrals to Provincial Victim Services (PVS)
  • Oversee the Saint John Police Victim Services Volunteer program including staffing, training, scheduling, and onboarding new volunteers
  • Consult with other police-based victim services groups to develop and benchmark resources to support victims
  • Assist in preparing Emergency Intervention Order applications, when required
  • Participate in SJP committees and training as necessary
  • Attend professional development activities to maintain the continuing education requirements for professional certification/licensing with a professional association
  • Perform other duties as required

Essential Qualifications:

  • Ability to be well organized and multi-task in a busy working environment
  • Ability to deal with individuals facing difficulty and stressful circumstances in a professional and compassionate manner
  • Ability to work independently but still able to excel as a member of a cohesive team
  • Strong verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of community and governmental agencies, organizations, and resources
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with legislation and policies
  • Familiarity with law enforcement applications and the Provincial Justice System would be an asset

Education/Experience:

  • A minimum of a Master's Degree from an accredited university in social work, psychology, or related health discipline
  • Two years experience working in a mental health or applied front-line service role
  • Registered with a professional body such as the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers, the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, or the College of Psychologists of New Brunswick
  • Experience with providing trauma-informed care and crisis intervention
  • Practical clinical experience is considered an asset
  • Experience working within a public safety and/or policing environment is considered an asset
  • Must be security cleared
  • Must take an Oath of Confidentiality
