The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a General Curator, Animal Care to join our dynamic animal management team. We are seeking an experienced, engaging, people focussed zoo curator who thrives in a conservation minded organization. We are looking for someone who is a collaborative team player and understands the intricacies of providing a world class guest experience while still ensuring the welfare of the animals in our care. We need someone who is a hands on manager and understands the importance of visibility as a leader.

Reporting directly to the Senior Director, Animal Care & Conservation, this role will play a key role in our animal management team and will be responsible for leading the care and curation of our zoological collection of over 200 animal species. This role plays an integral part in ensuring our husbandry and animal behaviour management practices are upheld to the highest level of accredited zoological practices while still supporting the guest experience. This role is a hands on role and will oversee the day to day animal care team working closely with their direct reports (Curators, Registrar) to ensure the welfare of all animals in our care.

What you will do:
• Oversee the animal management/husbandry protocols and procedures ensuring established husbandry standards are
met.
• Oversee the animal transfers and procedures, including research and development of proposals, obtaining
licenses and permits, transportation logistics, breeding loan and donation agreements with assistance from
curators and registrar.
• Create and modify animal care policies and procedures to ensure zoo meets accreditation standards.
• Implement project plans affecting animal collections and exhibit including Involvement with the overall
design.
• Supervise, coach and train zoo management and zoo administrative staff.
• Assist with the development of an animal collection and master plan for the zoo.
• Coordinate animal care programs including emergency response program, behind the scenes and other programs as
determined by the Senior Director.
• Facilitate the continuous advancement of a preventative animal health care program in collaboration with the
veterinary team.
• Ensure the development, implementation and utilization of our animal records system is robust and meets
accreditation standards.
• Prepare and manage the animal care operations budget in consultation with the Senior Director.
• Oversee the APZ dive program.
• Overall management of the aquatic filtration systems.
• Provide coverage for curators and assist with supervision of zoo keeping staff.
• Active participant in the AERT team.
• Own the accreditation process and documentation required in consultation with the Senior Director.
• Maintain accurate records.
• Comply with the collective agreement, safety & health legislation, employment legislation and APC policies in
the management of staff and zoo operations.

What you need to have:
• A bachelor’s degree in zoological science, wildlife management, or related field.
• Post-secondary schooling in management, business administration, human resources or related field is
considered an asset.
• CAZA and/or AZA affiliation.
• A minimum of 10 years of curatorial experience in an accredited zoological facility with an advanced
understanding of behavioural husbandry tools and methods.
• A minimum of 3 years supervisory/people management experience in a unionized setting.
• Understanding of working within collective agreements is a strong asset.

What you need to demonstrate to be successful in this role:
• Applied knowledge of best practices in animal husbandry, animal welfare, record keeping and zoological
accreditation standards.
• Applied knowledge of best practices in zoo exhibit design.
• Good project management skills in order to plan, organize and control resources in order to meet project
deadlines.
• Good understanding of water filtration systems.
• A strong understanding of budgeting and financial management principles.
• Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate with other departments in order to support the guest experience while still ensuring
our husbandry and animal welfare practices are upheld.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with senior management, director reports,
co-workers, volunteers and visitors.
• Aptitude for learning new technology.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and a computerized
animal record management software system.
• Ability to act quickly and efficiently while keeping a level headed approach when responding to emergencies.
• Physical capability to perform the duties of the position (walking for periods of 1-2 hours throughout the
zoo).

What we have to offer:
This is a permanent, full time position located in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada located at 55 Pavilion Crescent (postal code R3P 2N6). This is an English speaking role, however, bilingual in French is considered an asset. It offers a competitive compensation package with a salary in the range of $75,000 -$85,000 CAD based on experience and up to $5,000 in relocation expenses depending on the candidate’s home location. Your total rewards package also includes a company paid health, dental, life insurance, accidental death & disability and health care spending account as well as an employee paid long-term disability plan. A group RRSP and an employee assistance plan is also part of the incredible benefits package. Vacation pay is accrued at eight (8) percent equating to 4 weeks of holiday time per year.
